Abstract

Minolta DSCMetacarpal shortening osteotomy may be indicated for the treatment of mild metacarpophalangeal rheumatoid arthritis. Nineteen metacarpophalangeal joints in 7 patients were included in this study.

We evaluated mobility, ulnar drift, pain, recurrence of the deformity, and complications for each metacarpophalangeal joint. With a mean follow-up of 29.5 months (range, 12 to 63 mo), we obtained a 57.9% of excellent and good results, 26.32% of regular results and, 15.79% of poor results. The described surgical indications are based on the anteroposterior view of x-rays with radial correction and ulnar exaggerated deviation of the fingers.
